Worship in the Woods is the summer vespers series of the Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center. Join us Sundays at 7 PM from June 27 through August 15 in our beautiful, outdoor, wooded amphitheater!
Please bring your own lawn chair for seating. An offering will be taken to support the ongoing mission of the Heritage Center. Parking is available in the field at the top of our hill. Golf cart assistance is available for those who wish it; if handicap parking is needed at the bottom of the amphitheater, please request it when you arrive.
In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Log House and parking signs will be relocated to that area.
Our service on July 11 will feature George Bowers as speaker, with the BridgeBuilders quartet providing special music.
George Bowers was born and raised in Woodstock, VA and met Jesus at Valley Pike Church of the Brethren at an early age. He was called and licensed to the ministry while attending Virginia Tech where he earned his degree in Agricultural Education. After teaching two years in Culpeper Jr. High School, he returned to his home high school and taught Agriculture, Natural Resources and Leadership Development for 15 years. While teaching he began pastoring bi-vocationally at Antioch Church of the Brethren in 1996 and became their fulltime pastor in 2003 where he continues to serve. He also serves as the founding president of a homeless ministry, Family Promise of Shenandoah County, Vice President of SONshine Ministries, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Covenant Brethren Church. He has also served as Moderator of the Shenandoah District and on Standing Committee for the Church of the Brethren. George and his wife Nancy live on a hill overlooking the Shenandoah Valley and enjoy their 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Besides his family, George enjoys traveling, hunting, and writing poetry and has published 16 books of parables, poetry, and worship resources and his columns appear in three local newspapers.
The BridgeBuilders quartet was organized by the late Jacob Heatwole 25+ years ago, and has consisted of various men from Harrisonburg Mennonite Church who enjoy singing together and sharing their music with church and other groups on occasion. They have made 2 available CD's.
