Worship in the Woods

  • Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center 1921 Heritage Center Way Harrisonburg, VA, 22801 United States (map)

Worship in the Woods is the summer vespers series of the Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center. Join us Sundays at 7 PM from June 23 through August 11 in our beautiful, outdoor, wooded amphitheater!

Our service on June 23 will feature Josh Cox as speaker, with Simply Folk providing special music.

Since 2010, Josh Cox has served in vocational ministry as youth pastor, associate pastor and lead pastor of Southern Baptist churches before becoming a convinced Mennonite. Josh began as lead pastor at Grace Mennonite Fellowship in June 2022, his first Mennonite church. He was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina and is therefore partial to things like vinegar based bbq. He loves Christian rap and is an overall nerd who enjoys reading, anime and Nintendo. Some of his favorite authors are: Stanley Hauerwas, Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, NT Wright, and Tom Holland. He is married to Rudy and they have four children: Lorelai, Julian, Cordelia and Oliver.

Singing together since 2005, Becky Glick and Mike Simpson perform under the name Simply Folk. As the name implies, the duo presents sacred and secular songs in a folk style. Becky sings, plays guitar, and arranges the group’s vocals. Mike sings, plays guitar and banjo, and writes some of the songs Simply Folk performs for churches, community groups and downtown Harrisonburg First Fridays. They have recorded two albums together, one with original songs about Mike’s family entitled "Generations”, and a religious album entitled “I Do Believe - Songs of Faith and Hope”. Mike also recorded his own album of original songs called “Laughter and Tears”. Both Becky and Mike are retired educators of Rockingham County Public Schools and members of Sunrise Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg.

Please bring your own lawn chair for seating. An offering will be taken to support the ongoing mission of the Heritage Center. Parking is available in the field at the top of our hill. Golf cart assistance is available for those who wish it; if handicap parking is needed at the bottom of the amphitheater, please request it when you arrive.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Log House and parking signs will be relocated to that area.
