Worship in the Woods

  • Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center 1921 Heritage Center Way Harrisonburg, VA, 22801 United States (map)

Worship in the Woods is the summer vespers series of the Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center. Join us Sundays at 7 PM from June 23 through August 11 in our beautiful, outdoor, wooded amphitheater!

Our service on August 4 will feature Sarah Bixler as speaker, with Cantore providing special music.

Rev. Dr. Sarah Ann Bixler is Associate Dean of the Seminary and teaches formation and practical theology at Eastern Mennonite University. She holds a PhD in practical theology and MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a BA in English education from EMU. Sarah along with her spouse, Benjamin, and their three children practice restoration at their historic home in Linville, the Lincoln Homestead former plantation established by President Lincoln's great uncle. The Bixlers attend Park View Mennonite Church.

Cantore (Latin for “singers”) is a group of men who love to sing. Its members come from many walks of life. Outside of singing, they teach, preach, program computers, farm, write, make art, lay stone, roast coffee, sell things, or are retired. Their common bond is making good a cappella music. Their repertoire is primarily sacred and draws from a variety of styles and traditions, from standard religious choral works, to international, classical, bluegrass gospel, spirituals, folk, hymn arrangements, and a few pop and secular numbers. They perform in churches, banquets, festivals, retirement communities, civic events, and more. Since 2002 they have performed over 300 times, and have toured as far as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.

Please bring your own lawn chair for seating. An offering will be taken to support the ongoing mission of the Heritage Center. Parking is available in the field at the top of our hill. Golf cart assistance is available for those who wish it; if handicap parking is needed at the bottom of the amphitheater, please request it when you arrive.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the Log House and parking signs will be relocated to that area.
